찬송: 94 주 예수보다 더 귀한 것은 없네

말씀: 히브리서 12:18-29

제목: 옛 언약의 시내산, 새 언약의 시온산

기독교로 개종한 유대인들이 예수님을 믿는 것 때문에 고통과 환난이 계속되자, 이 환난이 유일하신 하나님을 섬기는 유대교를 버리고 기독교로 개종했기 때문이라고 믿게 된 사람들이 생겨났습니다. 그 이유로 다시 유대교로 돌아간 사람들이 있었고, 또한 유대교로 돌아가려는 사람들이 있었기 때문에 히브리서 저자는 옛 언약의 시내산으로 돌아가지 말고 새 언약의 시온산을 붙잡으라고 전합니다.

옛 언약의 시내산은 불이 붙는 산과 침침함과 흑암과 폭풍과 나팔 소리와 말하는 소리가 있는 곳, 일반 백성은 시내산에 올라갔다가는 죽음을 면치 못하게 되는 산입니다. 모세도 심히 두렵고 떨린다고 말한 곳이 옛 언약의 시내산입니다.

새 언약의 시온산은 살아계신 하나님의 도성입니다. 그곳에는 하늘의 예루살렘과 셀 수 없는 천사들이 있습니다. 그곳에는 하늘에 기록된 장자들의 모임과 교회와 만민의 심판자이신 하나님과 및 온전하게 된 의인의 영들이 있는 곳, 새 언약의 중보자 되시는 예수님의 피의 은혜로 들어간 수 많은 사람들이 있습니다.

옛 언약에는 짐승의 피가 있지만, 새 언약에는 하나님의 독생자 예수 그리스도의 피, 십자가의 은혜가 있습니다. 십자가의 은혜는 우리들이 살아있는 동안에, 그리고 예수님께서 공중 재림하시는 그 날까지만 받을 수 있습니다. 은혜의 때를 놓치면 천국에 들어가지 못합니다.

예수그리스도를 믿음으로 흔들리지 않는 나라를 기업으로 받은 하나님의 자녀된 그리스도인들은 경건함과 두려움으로 하나님을 기쁘게 섬겨야 합니다. 옛 언약의 시내산은 새 언약의 시온산의 그림자 일 뿐이니, 다시 옛 언약으로 돌아가는 것은 하나님의 은혜를 저버리는 죄가 됩니다.

개종한 유대인들이 다시 유대교로 돌아가려했던 이유는 환난과 어려움 때문입니다. 오늘날도 예수님을 믿는 다는 이유로 불편하고, 힘들고, 어려운 일들을 겪게 되면서, 적당한 거리를 두는 믿음생활, 즉 모이기를 패하는 어떤 사람들의 습관적인 모습으로 돌아가려는 사람들이 있습니다. 오늘 본문은 그러한 사람들에게 그것은 예수님의 은혜를 배반하는 죄라고 경고합니다.

히브리서 저자는 옛 언약의 시내산의 불은 모세 마저도 두려워 했지만 새 언약의 하나님은 그 불까지도 소멸시킬 수 있는 하나님 이심을 믿고, 새 언약 되시는 예수 그리스도를 끝까지 붙잡으라 전합니다.

아무리 힘들고 어렵고 불편해도 예수님을 놓치는 어리석은 사람이 되어서는 안됩니다. 믿음은 붙잡는 것이며, 신앙을 지키기 위해 기꺼이 자기 자신을 희생해야 합니다. 예수님 때문에 자존심도 참고, 내가 원하는 것도 내려놓아야 합니다. 우리들이 아직도 내려놓지 못한 것은 어떤 것이 있는지 깨닫는 것이 은혜입니다. 깨달았다면 무조건 내려놓는 사람이 은혜 안에 거하는 사람입니다.

사랑의 하나님아버지!

예수님의 십자가의 은혜로 새 언약의 시온산, 새 예루살렘, 하나님의 도성에 들어가고 그 곳에서 살 수 있게 해 주심에 감사드립니다. 이 세상을 살아가는 동안에 어떠한 어려움이 찾아온다 할지라도 끝까지 은혜의 십자가, 능력의 십자가, 소망의 십자가를 붙들겠습니다.

새 언약의 주인공되시는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘!

Scripture: Hebrews 12:18-29

Title: The Old Covenant's Sinai Mountain, the New Covenant's Zion Mountain

Some Jewish people who converted to Christianity faced ongoing suffering and hardship because of their belief in Jesus. Some began to think that these trials were due to leaving Judaism to become Christians. This confusion led some to return to Judaism, and there were even those who considered going back. Therefore, the author of Hebrews advises believers not to return to the old covenant represented by Mount Sinai but to hold on to the new covenant represented by Mount Zion.

The old covenant's Mount Sinai was a place of fire, gloom, darkness, storms, trumpet sounds, and a voice that spoke. Ordinary people who climbed Mount Sinai would face death. It's the place where even Moses admitted to being extremely fearful and trembling.

The new covenant's Mount Zion is the city of the living God. It is where the heavenly Jerusalem and innumerable angels reside. There, you will find the assembly of the firstborn recorded in heaven, along with the church, God, the judge of all, and the spirits of the righteous made perfect. It is the place where countless people have entered by the grace of the blood of Jesus, who serves as the mediator of the new covenant.

In the old covenant, there was the shedding of animal blood, but in the new covenant, there is the blood of God's only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and the grace of the cross. The grace of the cross is available only during our lifetime and until the day Jesus returns. Missing the opportunity for this grace means missing entry into the kingdom of heaven.

As Christians who have received the kingdom of Christ through faith, we should serve God with reverence and godly fear. Mount Sinai of the old covenant is just a shadow of Mount Zion in the new covenant. Returning to the old covenant is a sin of rejecting God's grace.

Some people may be tempted to return to their old ways when they face discomfort, difficulties, and trials in their faith journey, just as some Jewish converts were tempted to return to Judaism due to persecution. Today's passage warns that such a decision is a betrayal of Jesus' grace.

The author of Hebrews reminds us that the God of the new covenant is a consuming fire who can even obliterate Mount Sinai. So, we must hold fast to Jesus Christ, the One who is able to save us completely under the new covenant.

No matter how hard, challenging, or uncomfortable the journey may be, we must not become foolish and let go of Jesus. Faith requires holding on and willingly sacrificing ourselves to protect our faith. It means humbling ourselves, setting aside our pride, and surrendering our desires. Recognizing what we haven't let go of yet is a part of God's grace. Once we realize it, we become people who unconditionally let go, abiding in His grace.

Loving Father God,

We thank You for allowing us to enter the new covenant's Mount Zion, the new Jerusalem, and the city of God's strength through the grace of Jesus' cross. Regardless of the challenges we may face in this world, we will hold onto the grace of the cross, the power of the cross, and the hope of the cross until the end.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the protagonist of the new covenant. Amen!
